Sir Jim Ratcliffe plans on copying Chelsea’s transfer blueprint by hiring multiple sporting directors at Old Trafford.

The 71-year-old is on the cusp of completing a £1.3bn investment in the Red Devils, which will see him take a 25% stake alongside the Glazers.

As part of the deal, Ratcliffe will be given control of football operations.

Richard Arnold, the club’s CEO, is set to leave by the end of the year in a move that he claims is not connected to Ratcliffe’s impending arrival.

Nevertheless, it’s clear that Ratcliffe plans on changing personnel at board level and one of his main priorities is modernising United’s recruitment.

Ratcliffe had been expected to appoint a sole sporting director, who would be given significant control over transfers so that Erik ten Hag could focus on managing the first team.

But TalkSPORT say Ratcliffe will copy the model set out by Todd Boehly at Chelsea by hiring multiple directors.

Boehly has overseen £1.4bn of spending since his takeover of the club, and Chelsea are on their fourth manager in less than two years.

But Ratcliffe feels multiple sporting directors could help United reverse their success in the transfer market over recent years.

Paul Mitchell, the former Monaco transfer guru, is under consideration while Paolo Maldini is another name in the frame.

Dougie Freedman, the Crystal Palace director, has impressed Ratcliffe and reportedly has Sir Alex Ferguson’s backing.

Coronation Street hit with Ofcom complaints over gay couple’s intimate scene and we despair https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/coronation-street-hit-ofcom-complaints-gay-intimate-scene-19866716/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/coronation-street-hit-ofcom-complaints-gay-intimate-scene-19866716/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 09:37:27 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19866716
Billy attends an appointment with Paul in Coronation Street

Coronation Street has actually been hit with Ofcom complaints following a romantic scene with Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) and Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank).

Paul was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in emotional scenes earlier this year.

He originally thought he had injured his hand after being hit by the Underworld van, but soon learnt that his loss of movement was due to MND.

Since then, his condition has progressed, and he now relies on a wheelchair to get around. Things are only set to progress further for Paul, who will eventually lose the ability to speak.

In an episode that aired on Wednesday November 15, Paul and Billy visited a speech and language therapist, who explained how they could use equipment to replicate Paul’s voice.

Back at home, Billy suggested that they tried recording some things like the specialist had said, but Paul interrupted him with a kiss, saying that he was too busy ‘living life to the full’.

After a romantic afternoon on the couch, Billy and Paul read through the book they had been given, before reflecting on the reignited passion of their sex lives.

As Billy told Paul that he loved him, Paul pulled out his phone to record himself playing it back, so that he’d always be able to let Billy know that he loved him, even when he can no longer speak.

However, the episode has been hit with 52 complaints.

While some praised the intimate moment, others were thankful Billy’s guardian Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) was elsewhere.

One person wrote on Twitter, aka X: ‘Thank Christ Summer didn’t go straight home lmao.’

Another added: ‘Not being Homophobic, but Summer has to sit on that.’ [sic]

Robbie Williams choked up as he addressed the death of a fan after one of his Australia shows last week.

A woman in her 70s named Robyn Hall was rushed to hospital last week after falling down six rows of seats at 49-year-old Robbie’s Sydney show on November 16.

Hall suffered serious head injuries and was placed in a coma but sadly died days later.

Performing as part of his XXV tour in Melbourne on Wednesday night, doting dad Robbie choked up when paying tribute to Hall.

In a video shared on X, formerly Twitter, by user @leonsjogren, Robbie appeared to become tearful as he told the crowd: ‘When something happens like this it breaks my heart.

‘I’ve been thinking about it an awful lot, and I thought about it all the way through the show tonight.’

He added: ‘I just want to give a big shout-out and lots of love from me and my band to Robyn and Robyn’s family.

‘Let’s all sing up, she was somebody just like you who came to the gig, just like you did tonight.’

Robbie then dedicated his hit song Angel to Hall.

On Tuesday, more details emerged about the circumstances surrounding Hall’s death, which was confirmed at the beginning of the week by St Vincent’s Hospital where she was being treated for her injuries.

Her son, Michael Hall, also took to Facebook to mourn his mum.

According to MailOnline, he wrote: ‘I haven’t got the words to say what my mum meant to me.’

She is thought to have been on the upper grandstand level and trying to climb over seats when she fell in what was called a ‘serious incident’.

On Friday, an ambulance service spokesperson confirmed to Sky News Australia that she was in critical condition after paramedics were called to the scene at 10.15pm.

Venues NSW confirmed in a statement: ‘This is a terribly sad incident and our thoughts and wishes are with the patron and their family during this time. The patron was attended to immediately by venue staff and a nearby guest who is a qualified medical professional.

‘Medics arrived shortly after and the patron was taken from the venue by ambulance to hospital.’

Fred Sirieix
Fred Sirieix has shocked viewers with his age (Picture: ITV/Shutterstock)

Fred Sirieix has surprised I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here with his real age.

Fine French food, and spending his days playing Cupid on First Dates, have clearly done wonders for Fred as he’s managed to shock a few people in the best way by revealing he is 51. Quelle surprise!

They were particularly taken aback when he decided to partake in a workout with Marvin Humes topless which meant displaying his impressive abs.

Workout buddies Marvin, 38, and Fred basically turned the Australian outback into The Gym Group doing a series of squats and getting a pump on by lifting their makeshift dumbells – rocks. At least in the jungle, they don’t have to awkwardly loiter by the occupied leg press machine.

One downside of the setup is you can’t take AirPods into I’m A Celebrity, so Marvin and Fred were forced to make up their own gym playlist.

‘Jungle living, living in the jungle,’ they sang between sets. With LadBaby ruling themselves out of the Christmas chart battle after five years, perhaps we’ve just had the first listen to the festive number one. In order to increase their chances, they could collaborate avec Peter Andre and do a mash-up with Insania.

Fred Sirieix

Rather than listening to lyrics, viewers were more into Fred’s youthful looks.

‘Fred looks good for 51 though,’ remarked one person on X, formerly Twitter.

Another quipped: ‘Fred can be shirtless in the jungle any day.’

‘Fred’s quite the looker ain’t he?,’ wrote another viewer with great eyesight.

ITV needs to take notes as viewers want to see more of this content: ‘The shower and gym scene was SO needed.’

It wasn’t just viewers, who reacted pleasantly to the topless scenes – Josie Gibson, 38, had a hilarious reaction to Marvin heading for a shower.

With her eyes almost popping out of her head, Josie shouted: ‘Bloody hell Marv, is that your body? How many times a week do you work out? Jesus.’ Please Josie, never change.

The scenes have provided some light relief after a few disagreements in camp.

Fred severely offended YouTuber Nella Rose after making a comment that he could be her dad.

Nella Rose
Nella and Fred had a disagreement (Picture: I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here)

The TV star insisted he had made the remark because of their ages, as she is 26 – but Nella, who lost both her mum and her dad at a young age, was massively hurt by the comment.

She told him: ‘I would rather stay away from you, I don’t want to eat your food, I don’t want to talk to you. We can just live, you live on that side, I live on this side.’

Fred apologised profusely: ‘I made a mistake and I said something and I offended you, I’m really sorry. I’m really sorry you feel like this.’

I’m A Celebrity continues on ITV and ITVX tomorrow at 9pm.

We tried everything on McDonald’s new festive menu — here’s the best and worst https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/mcdonalds-festive-menu-ranked-best-worst-19861249/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/mcdonalds-festive-menu-ranked-best-worst-19861249/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 09:30:00 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19861249
McDonald's festive menu taste test picture: metro.co.uk
We put McDonald’s new festive menu to the test (Picture: GETTY/ metro.co.uk)

McDonald’s Christmas menu is finally back in stores, but not all dishes are created equal.

To see what’s made the naughty or nice list this year, the team here at Metro.co.uk tried to lot, to give you the lowdown before you splash your hard-earned cash.

The menu includes the return of the iconic Chicken Big Mac, alongside some new contenders including the Big & Cheesy burger (with option to add bacon), Cheese Melt Dippers (stuffed with Camembert and served with a tomato dip), and a new Chicken Combo option with 10 Chicken Selects. Nugget fans will also be racing to try the 20 Chicken McNugget sharebox with four select dips and four standard dips.

To finish off your festive meal at Maccies with something sweet, there are Galaxy Chocolate or Caramel McFlurries with chocolate stars and sauce or a Galaxy Caramel Pie that features crispy chocolate pastry and a Galaxy Caramel sauce.

And while this new pie sounds pretty tempting, many were outraged over its introduction as it meant that an iconic Christmas staple got the boot this year.

Here’s how we got on with our big taste test.

The Big & Cheesy, £5.49 (single), £7.29 (meal)

Rating: 2.5/5

Rachel holding The Big & Cheesy burger box
Rachel wasn’t overly impressed with the new burger (Picture: Metro)

Rachel says: ‘The Big & Cheesy does what it says on the packet. Yes it’s big. Yes it’s cheesy. But is it Christmassy? Not in the slightest.

‘The “snowflake flour” dusted on the bun is the only nod to the festive season but feels surplus to requirement. If anything, it takes away from the cheap and cheerful flavour of Maccie D’s bread that we all know and love.

‘Supposedly this burger comes with crispy onions, but that’s news to me. There are plenty of red onions though, too many for my personal taste, in fact. Still, it fills a hole at lunchtime for a bargain price, leaving spare change for Christmas shopping. It’s nothing noteworthy, but it delivers on the basics.’

Galaxy Chocolate McFlurry, £1.49 (mini), £1.99 (regular)

Rating: 3/5

Alice with the Galaxy Chocolate McFlurry
Alice didn’t think the Galaxy Chocolate McFlurry was overly festive (Picture: Metro)

Alice says: ‘What to say about the Galaxy Chocolate McFlurry… hmmm. It almost doesn’t warrant a review. It’s literally the exact same as a regular Galaxy McFlurry apart from the fact the chocolate pieces are shaped like stars. I’m guessing that’s what is meant to make this festive?

‘Was it sugary and tasty and chocolatey — absolutely. Will I buy it after a festive drunk night out? Of course. But as for it being a special Christmas menu addition, there’s nothing new or exciting about it.’

The Big & Cheesy with Bacon, £6.29 (single), £8.09 (meal)

Rating: 3.5/5

Courtney holding up the Big & Cheesy with Bacon
The new Big & Cheesy with Bacon (Picture: Metro)

Courtney says: ‘As a lover of all things cheese, I had high hopes for a burger called the Big & Cheesy and while I feel the size of this didn’t quite live up to the name (it’s decent, but it’s got nothing on the Big Mac), McDonald’s certainly made up for what was lacking when it came to the cheese.

‘This burger contains not one but two slices of cheese and the filling is also topped with a cheese sauce just for good measure. I was initially concerned that there didn’t seem to be much sauce inside, but it seems a little goes a long way in this case, as it’s very cheesy. The flavour was just right for me, not too artificial tasting and not too strong either. A rather mild cheese taste, but tasty nonetheless.

‘But along with the good, there were a few negatives. The Big & Cheesy with bacon is meant to contain crispy onions and red onion, but mine was just chock full of the latter which I wasn’t very keen on, although that’s just personal preference.

‘And while I do like to tuck into a cheese board or two over the holiday season, this cheesy burger just didn’t feel super festive. I’m not sure if a turkey and cranberry burger would work, but it could be fun to see McDonald’s whip up something new using more traditional Christmas ingredients next year.’

Chicken Big Mac, £4.79 (single) £6.59 (meal)

Rating: 4/5

Ross tucking into the Chicken Big Mac
The Chicken Big Mac was a winner (Picture: Metro)

Ross says: ‘I initially worried that the Chicken Big Mac would be too much carb-on-carb, and that’s coming from someone who once had spaghetti bolognese on top of a pizza. But it actually works really well, the Big Mac sauce surprisingly goes better with chicken than their mayo does – but I just didn’t think it needed the cheese slice. I know that might offend Big Mac purists but it would work much better without cheese.’

Cheese Melt Dippers, £2.59 (single), £6.89 (sharebox)

Rating: 4/5

Tanyel holding a Cheese bite
The cheese bites are perfect for a post-night out snack! (Picture: Metro)

Tanyel says: ‘You can’t go wrong with cheese bites – if you like cheese and a tomato dip, you’ll like these. But do they taste of camembert? Absolutely not. If I really think about it, I do get a slight richer creaminess than a regular cheese bite, but ultimately it just tastes like mozzarella. The flavour is good, so it still gets a 4 out of 5, but it doesn’t actually taste like what it’s meant to.

‘For a post-night out snack in Christmas party season, these go down a treat.’

Galaxy Caramel McFlurry, £1.49 (mini), £1.99 (regular)

Rating: 4/5

Courtney holding the Galaxy Caramel McFlurry
The Galaxy Caramel McFlurry was a hit with Courtney (Picture: Metro)

Courtney says: ‘I love ice cream and I love Galaxy Caramel, so this McFlurry was a winner for me! Some may argue it’s not the most festive choice of chocolate for this menu, but you do get mini Galaxy Caramel sweets in tubs of Celebrations at Christmas, so that’s good enough for me.

‘Plus I’m a sucker for anything that’s a cute shape, so the chocolate stars on top were right up my street. It’s not groundbreaking or particularly innovative as far as desserts go, but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it… and thanks to all that’s holy that on this occasion our local Maccies’ McFlurry machines weren’t broken!’

Galaxy Caramel Pie, £1.99

Rating: 5/5

Courtney holding McDonald's Galaxy Caramel Pie
The Galaxy Caramel Pie was the clear standout from the new menu (Picture: Metro)

Courtney says: ‘Ok, I’m going to confess something that might be controversial, but I’ve never been a fan of McDonald’s pies. I just didn’t get them. But that’s all about to change because this Galaxy Caramel pie might just be the best thing I’ve ever eaten from McDonald’s. And I’m not even exaggerating. The chocolate pastry is wonderfully crisp and the deep fried taste makes me think of hot doughnuts from the seaside. Add in the caramel sauce and the whole thing is just a dream for anyone with a sweet tooth.

‘Definitely get one of these before they are gone! I know I’ll be going back for more…’

Police carried out the largest seizure of synthtic opioids in a series of raids which lead to 11 arrests.

Around 150,000 tablets of a drug called Nitazene were found in Waltham Forest, east London, in a factory set up to make the pills, police said.

Detectives believe the drug was being sold on the dark web.

They also found various other class A and B drugs, a gun, a pill pressing machine, more than £60,000 in cash and £8,000 in cryptocurrency stored on hard drives.

A series of raids were carried out in Enfield, north London, on October 24.

Some 11 people were arrested between August 21 and November 21 and all charged with conspiracy to supply class A and B drugs.

Detective Superintendent Helen Rance, leading the investigation, said: ‘Synthetic opioids have been detected in batches of heroin found in London and across the UK.

‘They substantially raise the risk of incredibly serious harm to the user and are believed to be linked to a number of deaths.

‘We are working closely with partners to monitor and proactively tackle this issue, provide advice and remove the availability of these dangerous drugs from our streets.’

Police say anyone who has taken synthetic opioids should get medical treatment urgently.

They have taken the unusual step of highlighting signs of someone who may have taken one of these drug.

These include having small, narrowed pupils; reduced or loss of consciousness; dizziness or drowsiness; difficulty breathing; nausea or vomiting; cold or clammy skin; blue or grey lips and fingernails; low blood pressure or decreased heart rate.

Ms Rance added: ‘The public health advice remains that illegal drugs should not be consumed.

‘There are support services available for people who need help. Anyone who has consumed synthetic opioids and experiences the symptoms described should seek urgent medical treatment.’

R&B star simulates sex act with dancer on stage at 50 Cent gig leaving crowd speechless https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/50-cent-dancer-simulates-sex-act-guest-stage-shocking-crowd-19867015/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/50-cent-dancer-simulates-sex-act-guest-stage-shocking-crowd-19867015/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 09:29:06 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19867015

50 Cent has delivered everything on his UK tour so far including a dancing grandma and a surprise appearance from Ed Sheeran – but an on-stage sex act might just top them all.

During his final night at London’s O2 Arena on Tuesday, the G-Unit legend welcomed his collaborator and R&B singer Jeremih onto the stage.

The two stars have worked together several times in the past, notably on the track Down On Me, but surprisingly it wasn’t that song which Jeremih got, well, down and dirty.

While performing his own song Birthday Sex, Jeremih was seen canoodling with a dancer who was perched on top of a piano. Jeremih then proceeded to sing between her legs much to the shock of the audience who were almost stunned into silence bar a few screams as the scenes unfolded on the big screen.

However, perhaps no one was more shocked than Love Island star Marcel Somerville, who shared footage of his shocked facial expression after being filmed by his wife.

The reality star captioned the clip: ‘When you are with your wife at the 50 Cent tour & Jeremih’s part comes up.’

He added in the caption: ‘Well that was very unexpected.’

Reacting to the clip, one quipped: ‘Not a kids concert then,’ while another joked: ‘Bro out here singing while trying to remake 50 shades of grey the concert.’

Another laughed: ‘Was going to go with my son…glad I didn’t now.’

50 Cent’s tour has seen him celebrate his two decades of hits, which includes iconic songs such as In Da Club, P.I.M.P., 21 Questions, Many Men and Ayo Technology.

Perhaps no one was loving his catalogue more than the elderly woman who was caught vibing to his music at the Birmingham show earlier this month.

The 48-year-old shared a video of the woman having the time of her life and dancing to his 2007 track Ayo Technology. She could be seen waving her arms, slowly bouncing up and down and singing along to the chorus with a grin on her face and a pint in her hand.

50 – real name Curtis Jackson – called the woman ‘the coolest person at my show tonight by far.’

In a message accompanying the video, he added: ‘She was rocking wit me. Birmingham second show. LOL (sic).’

During one of 50’s final London shows, he was joined by none other then Ed Sheeran who roused the crowd with a performance of his hit Shape Of You.

I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! star Tony Bellew has revealed he was close to quitting the show following the death of his nan just days out from entering the jungle.

After weeks of speculation, the retired boxer has been confirmed as one of the latecomers to camp, which he’ll be joining alongside former jockey Frankie Dettori.

However, over the weekend, Tony shared the news that his beloved nan had died at the age of 97, which happened the day after he signed the contract for the reality series.

The former Cruiserweight World champion shared a heartfelt tribute on social media on Saturday.

Posting a series of photos of them together on Instagram, he captioned the post: ‘Goodnight Nan! I’ll love you forever girl.’

He’s now shared that he was close to pulling out of the show over concerns he wouldn’t be able to attend her funeral.

‘I’m here now,’ he continued.’

‘She was in a home and told my mum: “I’ll be able to watch every night”. But I’m sure she’ll be watching wherever she is, whatever she’s doing.’

However, Tony did acknowledge he did have some regrets about making the journey to Australia so soon after his grandmother’s death.

‘I signed it [the contract] the day before she passed away so there’s no going back now. I signed it and I honoured my agreement. In an ideal world, I would have left it, but I signed the day before my nan passed away,’ he explained.

Sharing how close he was to his nan, Tony explained she was ‘wonderful’ and a ‘diamond of an old lady’.

‘I come from a single-parent’s household. My dad left when I was 10.

‘So when you come from where I come from your nan helps around because your mother has to work.

‘So your nan was your second mum. So yeah, she was a lovely woman and had a heart of gold. She’ll be missed by all of us.’

Tony, who met his wife Rachael Roberts when he was just nine years old, also shared being in the jungle will be the longest time they’ve ever been apart.

‘This is the longest I haven’t spoken to my wife for 22 years, since the day we’ve been together. But I’m used to being alone in the camp with the microwave and the iPad for weeks,’ he said.

‘I’m sure I’ll get to know Nigel Farage and we’ll go from there. I’m from a different world from these people and I don’t class myself as a celebrity. I’m just good at punching someone in the face.’

On tonight’s episode, Tony and Frankie will be entering camp, joining other famous faces including former politician Nigel Farage, This Morning’s Josie Gibson and influencer Nella Rose.

I’m A Celebrity continues tonight on ITV and ITVX at 9pm.

Unbelievably, doctors are having to warn people not to try DIY poop implants https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/doctors-warn-people-not-try-diy-poo-transplant-19866646/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/doctors-warn-people-not-try-diy-poo-transplant-19866646/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 09:07:59 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19866646

Saffron Cassidy suffered from ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, for 15 years before she allegedly cured it using her partner’s poop.

‘It’s been about three and a half years of having no symptoms whatsoever,’ she told Yahoo Life. ‘And my colonoscopies show complete histologic remission.’

Now Cassidy has become an evangelist for the procedure known as faecal microbiota transplants (FMT). She has even made a documentary, Designer Shit: A Microbiome Love Story.

There are restrictions on the conditions doctors can treat using FMT, but a growing body of published work on FMTs holds promise for a range of disorders.

This has triggered several social media videos on how people can generate their own FMT products and administer the treatment in their own homes. However, this DIY approach carries significant risks.

FMT is the process of taking the faeces of an apparently healthy person and transplanting them into the intestines of a recipient in the belief that repopulating the natural microbial ecosystem of a patient with that of another may help alleviate certain medical problems.

A diagram of intestines.
Scientists are still discovering the effects of a gut’s microbiome on overall health (Picture: Getty/iStockphoto)

Although rooted in ancient Chinese medicine, modern FMT requires further scientific research to understand the mechanism of action and, more importantly, how to ensure the treatment is performed safely without risking introducing additional health issues to the recipient.

Over the last couple of decades, research into the human gut microbiome has given strong indications that the community of bacteria in our intestines are inextricably linked to both good health and poor health.

In the latter category, our microbiome has been linked with obesity, inflammatory bowel diseases, multiple sclerosis, depression, anxiety, autoimmune disease, sleep disorders, brain disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, and many more.

So before any FMT treatments can take place, the prospective donors undergo strict screening of their faeces and blood for potentially harmful bacteria or viruses that may further harm the patient – both immediately and in the long run. DIY FMT does not have these safeguards.

DIY approach lacks safeguards

In cases of DIY faecal transplants, the sufferers will often take poo samples from partners, family members, or close friends in the belief that they are healthy. But they will be unaware of any hidden factors that could cause further complications.

Unfortunately, these DIY ‘success stories’ may lead to more people believing that they may be cured of afflictions through repeating the process, but there is no guarantee of success – and a very real threat of complications in later years.

How many of us would dream of buying raw materials and taking the risk of trying to make our own medicines at home? Perhaps it is the familiarity of faeces that makes people see it differently from traditional medicine.

FMT tabelts
Seriously, don’t try this at home (Picture: Getty)

It is unlikely that anyone would take the risk of picking a tablet at random from an unmarked box in the hope that it may cure them of a health problem. Yet using unscreened faeces for an FMT procedure is in essence just that.

Scientists are working hard alongside doctors to understand what is needed to be able to provide FMT for a wide range of potential treatments and getting closer every year to reaching this goal.

In the meantime, reports of DIY FMT are likely to increase as success stories are reported in the media. But the final message should always be clear – that doing so is gambling with your health.

Kourtney Kardashian accidentally blindsided her family when it came to her very public baby announcement.

The Poosh owner sent fans into meltdown in June when she confirmed that she would be welcoming a child with husband Travis Barker.

The 44-year-old shared the news in the most iconic way possible, holding up a sign at the LA stop on Blink-182’s tour, which read, ‘Travis, I’m pregnant.’

While we were all living for the declaration – which was a not-so-subtle nod to the band’s All The Small Things music video – it turns out that she didn’t quite give mom Kris Jenner a warning that the news would be shared that way.

In the teaser for the season four finale of the Kardashians, which is released on Hulu and Disney + next week, Khloe Kardashian could be seen confessing: ‘She found out on the news, my mom. She wasn’t very happy….’

‘I woke up, I thought I was being Punk’d,’ Kris replied. ‘She forgot she had a family.’

Elsewhere in the brief footage, Kourtney also dropped the bombshell that they were planning a gender reveal party for their family and friends the very next day.

In shock at the speed of her eldest daughter’s plans, Kris quipped: ‘You’re telling me the day before? That’s so Kourtney.’

The lovebirds confirmed they were going to be welcoming a baby boy together, with the reality star giving birth to their son a few weeks ago.

While this marks their first child together, Kourtney is already mom to Mason, Penelope and Reign with ex-boyfriend, Scott Disick, while Travis shares Landon, Alabama and step daughter Atiana De La Hoya with former partner Shanna Moakler.

The latest episode took viewers behind the scenes of the announcement, as the reality star finally spilled the beans on expanding her family.

‘So guys, I’m having a baby. In case you can’t see my baby bump,’ she told the cameras, while wearing a robe.

‘I am five months pregnant,’ she continued in a confessional. ‘I have not told most people, I’ve told my closest friends, my family, my kids. I had told my mom pretty early on.’

We then saw footage from April of Kim, Kylie, Kendall and Khloe opening envelopes containing a scan photo around the 12-week mark.

Although Kourtney and Travis have yet to share a glimpse of their son, thought to be named Rocky Thirteen Barker, the mom-of-four confirmed his arrival in a birthday tribute to the drummer.

‘To my husband, my soulmate, my best friend, my lover, my daddy to our baby boy, my everything… I wish you the happiest birthday,’ she wrote on Instagram, beside a very NSFW photoshoot.

‘You make all of my dreams come true and I feel so blessed to have you by my side. I love you beyond words, forever.’

The Kardashians airs on Hulu in the US and is available to stream on Disney+ in the UK.

Ever since Chris Clenshaw took over the role as EastEnders boss, fans have loved seeing the development of the BBC One soap and how introducing new characters – and bringing old ones back – impacts the current Walford community.

Of course, one of the biggest returns in recent years has been that of Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins). The EastEnders audience were left in shock earlier this year when it was confirmed Cindy was actually alive and now, she is living in Albert Square trying to fit back into London life.

An episode set in France allowed us to discover that Cindy was living under cover as Rose Knight shortly after her arrest 20 years ago.

The instalment also confirmed Cindy was in a relationship with Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) and living with their son Peter (Thomas Law).

When Cindy returned to her old home she was met with the Knight family. While living as Rose, Cindy married George (Colin Salmon) and gave birth to Gina (Francesca Henry) and Anna (Molly Rainford), but was told to leave the family for protection purposes after she travelled from Marbella to Walford following Lucy Beale’s murder.

Elsewhere, Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) was left horrified a few weeks ago when Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo) headed back to the Queen Vic pub.

Last seen in 2016, Dean is now working alongside Cindy and Ian for their new pie and mash business, and living in Walford because he needs to be close to daughter Jade, who is unwell and in hospital.

EastEnders has been on our screens for over 35 years and while it’s important for the soap to be modern and current, the return of old characters not only excites fans but certainly brings an element of nostalgia to the show.

Chris Clenshaw has been reflecting on his time as the boss of EastEnders so far and when asked about bringing more characters back, there was one name at the top of his wish list.

‘Grant Mitchell, for more brotherly drama with Phil!’, he said during a chat with TV Times.

Grant was last seen in 2016, when he reunited with his family for Peggy Mitchell’s (Barbara Windsor) funeral.

Way back in January, Ross Kemp was once again asked about reprising the role.

‘I don’t think you can ever say never, you know?,’ he told The One Show hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas, who posed the question from a fan on social media.

‘I loved the part, I did it for 10 years.

‘I must have liked it because I stayed there for 10 years. But, you know, look, it was great fun, I loved the cast, it was a great job. [I’m] doing lots of different things right now, but never say never!’

Martin Lewis said it will impact 20 million households across England, Scotland and Wales (Picture: ITV/REX/Shutterstock)

Martin Lewis has said 20 million households will pay more for their energy bills this January than any winter before.

The energy price cap will increase by 5% in January which means energy bills will be more expensive for households in England, Scotland and Wales, according to Mr Lewis.

It will come as a worry for Brits up and down the UK who are still struggling with the cost of living crisis.

He tweeted: ‘Energy price cap is UP 5% ON 1 Jan (so every £100 you pay now will be £105 then) making energy more expensive for 20m+ homes in Eng, scot and wales.’

Mr Lewis went on to say that households will pay more this year because last winter every home got a £66 monthly government reduction.

While inflation dropped this October, this ignores the missing government support which means in reality people will pay more for their energy bills, according to Mr Lewis.

He continued: ‘In other words a typical home pays £28/mth more this winter, or factor in seasonal adjustments due to high winter use and as a back of envelope calculation it is more like £45more.’

The lack of government support means households will suffer more this winter (Credits: Ken McKay/ITV/Shutterstock)

The average household energy bill will rise by £94 a year from January after Ofgem increased its price cap in response to rising wholesale prices.

Ofgem announced its latest price cap this morning alongside energy consultancy Cornwall Insight.

They have predicted it will increase from the current £1,834 for a typical dual fuel household to £1,931, a 5% jump to take effect from January 1.

It suggests the typical bill will then fall to £1,853 from the start of April, but will not drop below today’s level until July next year.

But in better news Cornwall Insight said recent mild weather was helping to bring down gas prices which could help reduce bills next year.

Dr Craig Lowrey, principal consultant at Cornwall Insight, said: ‘An unstable wholesale energy market, coupled with the UK’s reliance on energy imports, makes it inevitable that energy bills will rise from current levels.

‘This leaves households facing yet another winter with bills hundreds of pounds higher than pre-pandemic levels, and affordable fixed deals few and far between.’

There was no mention in the Chancellor’s budget about help to offset household energy bills (Picture: PA)

During yesterday’s autumn statement there was no mention of any further help to offset household energy bills.

Adam Scorer, chief executive of fuel poverty charity National Energy Action, said: ‘The gaps in this autumn statement are devastating, especially for the poorest households.

‘An ‘average household’ is now paying £800 more per year to heat and power their homes since the start of the energy crisis.

‘With a VAT windfall from higher energy bills and underspent money that was allocated to help vulnerable people keep warm last year, it is clear that Chancellor Jeremy Hunt had the headroom in the finances to act, but he has done nothing to help the most vulnerable people keep warm and safe at home.’

Nigel Farage hints he could be future PM to I'm a Celeb camp

Nigel Farage refused to rule out making a bid for the top job in government when asked by I’m A Celebrity campmates.

The former leader of the Ukip Party, 59, was quizzed on whether he would ever consider becoming prime minister.

He also called Boris Johnson ‘the most chaotic person he has ever met’.

Radio presenter and Made in Chelsea star Sam Thompson asked Nigel: ‘Who’s your favourite prime minister, ever, in your lifetime?’

Nigel replied: ‘Really, in my lifetime, two prime ministers who’ve been really strong, who have changed the country – one’s Thatcher and one’s Blair.

‘I didn’t like the way Blair changed the country at all, but I have to admit he was a strong leader. And Margaret was a very strong leader – they were tough times. But she changed the country completely. Completely.’

EastEnders actor Danielle Harold then asked: ‘Would you ever want to run?’

Nigel Farage hints he could be future PM to I'm a Celeb camp
He told cameras behind the scenes ‘never say never’ (Picture: ITV)

Nigel said: ‘I dunno – we’ll see. Depends how much mess the country gets in. I honestly don’t know, I mean it’s not an easy job.’

‘As for little me, there’s a lot of speculation. After they lose the next election, oh, maybe Nigel becomes leader of the Tory Party one day.

Speaking to the camera afterwards, Nigel said: ‘So, there’s a lot of chatter about it, whether it’s going to happen I have no idea.

‘The important thing though is to say this: never say never.’

His appearance on the reality television programme as a ‘GB News host and ex-politician’ has led viewers to question whether Nigel is attempting to relaunch his political career.

It comes after he claimed he could be Conservative Party leader ‘by 2026’ after attending this year’s Tory conference.

The Kent resident has already been involved in a few clashes in Australia after YouTuber Nella Rose challenged his views over immigration.

First Dates star Fred Sirieix also lost his cool with Nigel this week. The French dad-of-two called him ‘shameful’ following a discussion about Brexit.

Squid Game: The Challenge.
Squid Game: The Challenge is a reality spin-off of the popular drama series (Picture: Netflix)

Squid Game: The Challenge fans have been left doing a double take after noticing a former reality star taking part in the spin-off series.

Based on the hit South Korean dystopian drama, the recently released reality series follows 456 real players from around the world who enter the competition show in pursuit of a record-setting cash prize of $4.56 million (£3.725 million).

While things won’t be as dark as the original, where players were killed off one by one until there was a single player left standing, contestants are doing all it takes to pursue the prize money.

But when tuning in this week, viewers realised one of the contestants was a familiar face they’d seen many times before.

More than 20 years after starring on Gladiators, Michael Van Wijk, who was known as Wolf on the sports entertainment show, has signed up to put his body on the line all over again.

When watching the first episode, eagle-eyed fans spread the word about what they’d noticed.

‘As if Wolf from Gladiators is in Squid Game,’ one person posted on X, formerly Twitter.

‘Not Wolf from Gladiators participating in the Squid Game,’ someone else shared alongside a photo of him amongst the crowd.

Even Netflix played into the game of trying to spot him, joking that they would offer: ‘4.56 million (imaginary) dollars to anyone who spotted this iconic ’90s villain in Squid Game: The Challenge.’

The day after the episodes were released Wolf has also shared a photo of his time on the show, however in the snap he looks less than impressed.

But, as he explained, not all was at it seemed.

‘I have not seen this [the show] yet, but I’m sure when people see it that it looks like it [one of the challenges] took a few minutes to complete, when in reality we had to stand still for a couple of hours in -3 degree temperatures,’ he captioned the Instagram post.

Many of his fans were yet to realise he was appearing on the show, and quickly flooded the comments section to say they were going to tune in.

‘I wasn’t going to watch it, but if you’re in it, now I will!’ one person wrote.

Michael starred in all eight seasons of the original Gladiators series, which ran from 1992 until 1999.

His Wolf persona was inspired by the film Dances with Wolves, which he auditioned for in 1989, however was unsuccessful.

After Gladiators wrapped up, he moved to New Zealand and opened a chain of gyms.

Squid Game: The Challenge is now streaming on Netflix.

Alan Carr has found love with hairdresser Callum Heslop.

The Chatty Man star, 47, has even introduced 27-year-old Callum to his A-list pal Adele who promptly invited the new couple to spend Thanksgiving with her.

It’s Alan’s first romance since he split from his partner of 13 years, Paul Drayton, nearly two years ago.

Alan and Callum got together earlier this year and have already holidayed in Italy together.

The latter even recently joined his comedian beau in the USA.

This week, a source said of the pair’s romance: ‘They have a really nice friendship and that has been the base for a relationship to blossom.’

They added to the Sun: ‘They see a lot of each other and Callum took a break from work to head to the States with Alan.

‘It takes a lot to introduce a partner to someone as famous as Adele but she couldn’t have been friendlier.’

Meanwhile, Alan and Paul announced their split in a joint statement in January 2022, saying that the decision between the former couple was reportedly made ‘jointly and amicably’.

They famously tied the knot in LA back in 2018 with Adele getting ordained so she could marry them.

Following their split, Alan even joked that he retained custody of their friendship with Adele.

Back in March, Alan quipped that he was in the midst of his ‘slaggy phase’.

In an episode of his Life’s A Beach podcast, Alan spoke to Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, 44, about dating.

When Jake revealed that he is single and dating, Alan asked ‘if he knows anyone’, adding that he is in his ‘slaggy stage’ following his divorce.

‘I want to be a slag, but to be a slag you need someone to be slaggy with,’ the comedian said.

Alan then shared an anecdote in which he went on a trip to Sri Lanka with two couples while single, joking that paying to stay alone while on the holiday was like paying ‘an ugly tax’.

Metro.co.uk has reached out to Alan’s reps for comment.

If you want that false lash effect and thick brows that would make Cara Delevingne question whether she’d over-plucked, you need this serum that’s an absolute steal right now thanks to Black Friday.

Whether you fell victim to the early noughties over-plucking trend or until TikTok, thought that picking at your mascara and wiping off the remnants with a cucumber face wipe was a successful skincare regime, you’re probably eager to get those lashes longer and those brows a-bushing.

And this lash and brow gift set from Grande Cosmetics has been hailed ‘a dream’ and ‘must have’ for its results on brows and lashes by impressed shoppers, should you want all products in one place.

So what’s in these wonders that aims to help your lashes and brows grow so rapidly?

Well, firstly, the GrandeLASH-MD Lash Enhancing Serum has a blend of vitamins, peptides, and amino acids that aim to boost the appearance of thicker lashes in just four to six weeks, according to the brand, and create a total transformation in three months.

So you can be fluttering those lashes over Christmas dinner and practically create your own wind with them by early spring.

Did we mention the brand currently has 30% off products from now until November 27? So even if the gift set sells out (which we predict it will) you can still snag some savings on the viral products.

Two examples of eyelashes, one with shorter lashes, the other with longer.

Brows are even looking thicker (Picture: Grande)

When it comes to GrandeBROW, it not only aims to help fill out your brows like a traditional brow gel but it contains a conditioning formula that aims to strengthen the appearance of brows.

And you also get the Conditioning and Peptide Mascara that’s enriched with the good stuff to help keep the lashes luscious.

One customer revealed they had been getting showered with compliments after using the products, adding: ‘I have used this product the past few weeks and I have gotten so many compliments on my lashes and brows! As someone who has thin lashes, they have a thicker look to them now. It has also helped create full thicker looking brows!’

Another echoed their statement, adding: ‘I now get compliments on my eyelashes almost daily!’

'The product is worth every penny'

One customer described it as the perfect holiday gift, saying: ‘This duo is probably the best thing you can give in the holidays. The serums make a difference and the mascara leaves your eyelashes looking so voluminous and pretty.’

Plus, in the Black Friday sale, you can get a jammy saving on this set as it’s only £69.00, as opposed to £131.00 for all products.

Seriously, what more could you need? Big brows, fluttering lashes and great savings? The ultimate trifecta.

While the products have received a ton of praise for their positive results, some users have reported suffering irritation and even discolouration on their lids. Some have also claimed they’ve suffered periorbital fat loss, or fat loss around the eyes. The brand previously said sensitivity with their products is rare but did suggest customers only use every 1 to 12 days at first before moving to daily use.

Grande Cosmetics also said in a statement: ‘We’ve invested in rigorous independent third-party laboratory testing to ensure its safety, including the following:

• Industry standard RIPT testing has included that when used as directed, GrandeLASH-MD
does not present potential for dermal irritation or allergic contact sensitization.
• Ophthalmologist testing has concluded that it is safe for use with contacts and lash extensions.
• HET-CAM testing has graded its irritation potential at the lowest possible rating scale: none to slight.’

A vehicle crashed through a brick bridge in south London today, upending morning commutes for countless travellers.

Railway lines running through between Sutton (Surrey) and West Croydon are cancelled while engineers remove fallen debris, Network Rail Kent and Sussex said on X.

Photographs uploaded by the operator show chunks of brick lying on the tracks.

‘Please continue checking before you travel,’ Network Rail added.

Southern said no trains are able to run between the two stations ‘until further notice’ and called on riders to give themselves an extra hour to get to their destiation.

Rail replacement bus services are in place between Epson Downs and Sutton calling at Banstead and Belmont.

The Transport for London (TfL) status update website says: ‘No service between Sydenham and West Croydon due to a vehicle striking a bridge in West Croydon area.

‘Good service on the rest of the route. Good service on all other London Overground routes.’

TfL, Southern, the British Transport Police and London Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.

The left-back was forced out of Italy’s latest squad with a hamstring issue (Picture: Getty)

Destiny Udogie is in line to return to the Tottenham starting XI after overcoming a hamstring problem that ruled him out of the latest international fixtures.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed an excellent campaign so far, starting the first nine Premier League games of the season and emerging as a key player for Ange Postecoglou.

However, he has endured a difficult couple of weeks more recently, with a muscle injury coupled with suspension limiting his game time.

Udogie was withdrawn after just 56 minutes against Fulham at the backend of October, having complained of tightness at half-time, and then missed the subsequent trip to face Crystal Palace.

Despite barely training in the build-up he returned to the side against Chelsea, though picked up two yellow cards and was given his marching orders as Spurs were reduced to nine men in a 4-1 defeat.

That dismissal meant he was suspended for Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves last time out, though he likely would not have played anyway due to his hamstring problem.

Udogie was initially selected in Italy’s squad for crucial Euro 2024 qualifiers against North Macedonia and Ukraine but was forced to withdraw, with Luciano Spalletti confirming it was due to injury.

But he has now allayed fears over his hamstring issue and says he has fully recovered from the problem ahead of the visit of Aston Villa on Sunday.

Speaking to The Athletic this week, Udogie said he is ‘feeling really good’ and will ‘definitely’ be ready to face Villa.

Udogie also spoke about his relationship with Postecoglou and his adaptation as an inverted left-back, saying: ‘The first day I came in, he called me to speak with him and he told me I’m a key player for him. He explained what he wanted from me, and knowing I had the trust of the head coach was a big motivation.’

He added: ‘At the beginning playing as an inverted full-back was a bit different because I was a wing-back. As a wing-back I’m just on the side, but playing partly in midfield you have to be aware of what’s going on behind you.

‘You have to be ready before you receive the ball. You have to know what is behind you and in front of you and what you’re going to do. So it’s a bit like being a midfielder. At the beginning I was more operating close to the wing. But step by step, I move more inside, feel more secure. It’s going well. I’m enjoying it.’

While Udogie may be back, a number of other players remain sidelined for Spurs with Romero serving the second of his three-match ban and Micky van de Ven and James Maddison both out of action until the new year.

Guglielmo Vicario suffered from ‘flu symptoms’ while on international duty with Italy but is believed to have recovered from his illness, with Eric Dier and Ben Davies expected to continue at centre-back in front of him.

Doctor… who? How AI is already shaping the NHS  https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/ai-already-shaping-nhs-19864402/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/ai-already-shaping-nhs-19864402/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 08:00:00 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19864402
Medical technology concept
AI is already influencing the medical industry (Picture: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the new tech trend that is on everyone’s lips. We can thank OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform for that, as this generative AI tool has taken the public by storm thanks to its simple, fun, and easy-to-use functionality.

AI has captured the UK’s imagination to such an extent that it is now influencing university admissions.

UCAS chief executive Clare Marchant says that 2023’s data shows that applications to study computing were up almost 10% compared to 2022, with 95,000 students applying for computing and AI-related courses.

And the government, too, is firmly behind the potential AI has to offer, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announcing in October that he intends to set up a body that will investigate AI risks.

Is AI the future of healthcare?

Given all that, it’s not too much of a stretch to imagine a future where AI will be used in hospitals and healthcare settings for a whole host of tasks, like X-ray and MRI analyses, cancer detection, or to transcribe medical documents.

That’s a while away though, right? Actually, not so fast: the truth is that these are all happening right now, with plenty more to come in the future.

Where logic meets illusion
AI innovation is already happening (Picture: Getty Images)

The NHS says it sees AI as a ‘key element in digital transformation “to help clinicians in applying best practice, eliminate unwarranted variation across the whole pathway of care, and support patients in managing their health and condition”’.

On the way are even more high-tech innovations. Think wearable devices like smart health monitors with the ability to provide accurate and personalised diagnoses on your wellbeing.

And because AI is so good at analysing huge amounts of data, it can be used to spot patterns – such as a new virus, or addiction patterns in communities, for example – which may take longer to be picked up by humans.

Jobbio x Metro: Unlocking your potential

We are excited to announce a strategic partnership between Metro and Jobbio’s Amply network.

This partnership will transform the way job opportunities are shared, making it easier for job seekers to connect with their perfect positions.

People are rightfully concerned about the ethical implications of using artificial intelligence for medicine, pointing out that AI models can be flawed, which could pose risks to patient safety.

While those issues are worked out and proper oversight is put in place, it’s still a good idea for healthcare professionals to look to the future and see how AI may not only affect their own role, but also how it can augment it.

Slack’s recent State of Work Report 2023 found that 83% of UK workers think AI and automation will make for more impactful work, and when it comes to fears over whether it will take your job entirely, economist Richard E. Baldwin, a professor of international economics at the IMD Business School, says it best.

‘AI won’t take your job, it is somebody using AI that will take your job,’ he said recently.

It’s food for thought, no matter what industry you work in. And if you’d like to ensure that you’re on an upward trajectory in your career, a job move can provide you with a fresh perspective, as well as updated skills.

The Metro Job Board is a great place to start your search, containing thousands of healthcare roles all across the UK, such as the three below.

Coronation Street spoilers for next week follow, with a picture gallery above teasing all the shocks and twists to come on the cobbles.

Joseph is unwell and, on Bernie Winter’s (Jane Hazlegrove) advice, Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) makes him a lavender tea in the hopes it will perk him up.

Joseph, however, passes out, with Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) later calling the ambulance. Chesney blames himself, wishing that he’d listened to Gemma, who previously voiced her concerns.

The doctor subsequently reveals that Joseph has been poisoned, leaving everyone reeling in shock.

Later in the week, a child protection officer shows up, wanting to interview Gemma. With everyone out of the house, Caitlin questions a horrified Gemma and suggests that she may have poisoned Joseph on purpose.

Will Gemma be able to prove otherwise?

Elsewhere on the Street, Ed Bailey (Trevor Michael Georges) is shocked when Sarge arrives for the holidays earlier than expected. Ronnie (Vinta Morgan), meanwhile, suggests a big family meal out, insisting that he and Ed will pick up the bill.

Having taken out a payday loan, Ed scans the racing pages and later watches the racing on his phone while Sarge makes digs.

Dee-Dee (Channique Sterling-Brown) quietly explains to Joel that Sarge thinks they lost their house because of a bad business decision, not Ed’s gambling.

Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher), meanwhile, assures Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) that she’s looking forward to lunch with Isla and her senior colleague, Miles, as it’s time they got to know each other’s friends

A 10-year old boy with severe asthma faced neglect and multiple failings in his medical care, an inquest has concluded.

Essex area coroner Sonia Hayes said the death of William Gray, from Southend, was avoidable, the law firm that represented his family said.

William survived a near-fatal asthma attack on October 27, 2020, but he was discharged just four hours later without the severity being properly recorded.

He died seven months later, on May 29, 2021, after going into cardiac arrest caused by a respiratory arrest resulting from his asthma.

A 10-day inquest in Chelmsford, which concluded on Wednesday, identified a string of failings in his care that amounted to neglect.

In addition to his swift discharge, concerns were also raised about his GP surgery’s failure to conduct annual asthma reviews and carry out medication reviews.

An entrance to Southend University hospital in Essex. Hospitals in the county have declared a major incident and local authorities, concerned about the number of Covid-19 cases, have asked for military help to increase hospital capacity, with fears over critical care, bed capacity and staff sickness.

The coroner also found there was a lack of sufficiently trained asthma nurses, and that they did not follow British Thoracic Guidelines.

Phone calls with nurses ‘lasted a matter of minutes, were not meaningful and did not ask the most rudimentary questions’, the law firm said.

On the night of William’s death, his mother Christine Hui made two 999 calls.

Law firm Leigh Day said the coroner found that at the time of the first call, it was likely that William was having a severe asthma attack, and a category one ambulance should have been dispatched.

An inquest found multiple failures from healthcare professionals affected the outcome of his death (Picture: PA)

The law firm said that the coroner found that when paramedics arrived on scene adrenaline was not administered and, ‘on the balance of probabilities, this would have affected the outcome in this case.’

Ms Hui described her son as a ‘funny, caring little boy who liked to make jokes and had a heart of gold’.

She said: ‘He was adored by his friends. He had dreams of working in medicine as a doctor or a paramedic because he saw the care he was given, and he wanted to do that for others.

‘Today is bittersweet because, while the coroner’s conclusion gives us some closure, this is the final stage in saying goodbye to our son, brother, grandson, great-grandson, nephew and friend.

‘We believed that William’s asthma was controlled but now we know that wasn’t the case. Parents know their children best and should trust their instincts.

‘If you feel something isn’t right, question it.

‘There is nothing that can take away the grief our family feels but it is our hope that another family will hear our story and it could prevent a further tragedy.’

Julie Struthers, who represented William’s family, said there were a ‘substantial number of failures by multiple healthcare professionals in his care’, and the case showed the ‘importance of improving asthma treatment for children nationwide’.

Diane Sarkar, chief nursing and quality officer for Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust which runs Southend Hospital, said that ‘our heartfelt condolences go out to William’s family’.

She said: ‘We’d like to assure them that we are committed to learning from this terrible loss and that since his death in 2021 we have brought in numerous changes to improve patient care as a direct result of learning from William’s case.’

Melissa Dowdeswell, chief of clinical operations at the East of England Ambulance Service, said: ‘Our heartfelt condolences go out to William’s family and our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.

‘We accept the coroner’s findings and will assess what further actions need to be taken once we have reviewed them.

‘Since this tragic case we have significantly increased the numbers of staff able to perform intubation and these numbers continue to rise with an expansion of advanced paramedics within the trust.’

I'm A Celebrity latecomers revealed
Two sports stars were rumoured to be a part of the line-up (Picture: ITV)

I’m A Celebrity 2023 is officially underway, but two stars are joining the camp as latecomers, and they’ve finally been unveiled.

Nigel Farage and This Morning’s Josie Gibson have joined Jamie Lynn Spears and Marvin Humes on the reality programme, with the former Ukip leader reportedly becoming the highest-paid contestant on the show ever.

First Dates’ Fred Sirieix and EastEnders actress Danielle Harold are also be taking on Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly’s bushtucker trials.

Last year, comedian Seann Walsh and former health secretary Matt Hancock provided quite the shock when they arrived in the jungle after the celebrities had already begun filming.

And now two sports stars that were rumoured to be heading into the jungle have announced, as this year’s latecomers.

Who are the I’m A Celeb 2023 latecomers?

World-famous jockey Frankie Dettori and former pro boxer Tony Bellew are doing are heading into the jungle.

Frankie, 52, previously confirmed he had jetted off to Australia, after rumours he was in ‘advanced talks’ to star on the show.

The Italian jockey, who announced his retirement late last year but made a recent U-turn, said in a video montage: ‘My strength as a person, I am a fighter, I won’t lie to you, I can be quite moody sometimes when I lose so I don’t know what kind of Frankie is going to come out.’

‘I’ve been racing for 36 years in front of thousands of people, but this is my biggest challenge,’ the 52-year-old added.

Meanwhile 40-year-old Tony said he is going into the jungle ‘because it’s a challenge, and guess what, I love a challenge’.

‘I’m a serial winner, I hate to lose, I am not going to give in. I’ve faced many different things in my life now and the jungle is next, let’s see what you’ve got for me,’ he added.

At the end of Wednesday’s episode, co-host Anthony McPartlin said: ‘There are more surprises on the way because at the end of the trial the celebrities will be split into two teams of five.’

While Declan Donnelly said: ‘Over the next couple of days those teams will be going head to head in trials and challenges and those trials will take place in a special area known as the Scarena.’

A source had previously told The Sun: ‘Frankie is a superstar signing for jungle casting producers as he is a legend in the horse racing world and would be reality TV gold.

‘He might be pint-sized, but his personality is larger than life and he has real charm and a sense of humour.

‘Frankie would be brilliant in the Bushtucker Trials too as being competitive is second nature to him. He’s got a wealth of stories he could tell around the campfire too to keep other campmates entertained.’

Meanwhile, Tony – who has previously starred on Celebrity SAS – was one of the first names reported for this year’s I’m A Celebrity.

Katie Price’s ex Danny Cipriani was also rumoured to be heading into the jungle, as well as The Apprentice’s Thomas Skinner, and Denise Van Outen.

This comes after filming was reportedly thrown into chaos after Coronation Street star Alan Halsall was forced to pull out of the series after undergoing knee surgery.

A source said: ‘It’s a big blow, but there’s no way he can go to Australia – his surgeon would have a fit.

‘Alan needs to recover fully and then maybe he can take part next year.’

The insider continued to The Mirror: ’It’s a massive shame because everyone was really looking forward to having him on the show, but these things happen.’

I’m A Celebrity starts on Sunday, November 19 at 9pm on ITV2.

Jake Daniels blasts Jordan Henderson and brands Saudi Arabia move ‘a slap in the face’ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/jake-daniels-calls-jordan-hendersons-saudi-arabia-move-a-slap-face-19866200/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/jake-daniels-calls-jordan-hendersons-saudi-arabia-move-a-slap-face-19866200/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 07:51:06 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19866200

Blackpool forward Jake Daniels has said it was a slap in the face when Jordan Henderson moved to play in Saudi Arabia.

Daniels last year became the first openly gay active British male professional footballer since Justin Fashanu in 1990.

Former Liverpool captain Henderson had been a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ+ community before his decision to join Saudi club Al-Ettifaq from Liverpool in the summer.

Homosexuality is illegal in the Gulf state, leading some to accuse the England midfielder of turning his back on the community.

Speaking to the BBC’s Newsbeat, Daniels said: ‘He (Henderson) messaged me when I came out. He was backing me and said: ‘We’re proud of what you’ve done.’

‘Seeing him move to Saudi, it kind of like, slaps me in my face really. Obviously it was frustrating. But I guess the money pays well, and money must mean more to people.’

Henderson’s former Liverpool and England team-mate Steven Gerrard is currently his manager in the Saudi Pro League.

Daniels, who made his senior debut for Blackpool in May 2022, said Gerrard had personally reached out out to him following his decision to come out.

He added: ‘I met him in person and he said: ‘If you ever want to get in contact then message me’. But he moved over (to Saudi Arabia). It was frustrating.’

Jordan Henderson's responds to the LGBTQ+ Community

Speaking in a wide-ranging interview earlier this year, Henderson attempted to defend his move to the Saudi Pro League and insisted his transfer was not motivated by money, amid reports he was set to earn £700,000-a-weeek…

Response to the LGBTQ+ Community:

‘I can understand the frustration. I can understand the anger. I get it. All I can say around that is that I’m sorry that they feel like that.

‘My intention was never, ever to hurt anyone. My intention has always been to help causes and communities where I felt like they have asked for my help.

‘Now, when I was making the decision, the way that I tried to look at it was I felt as though, by myself not going, we can all bury our heads in the sand and criticise different cultures and different countries from afar. But then nothing’s going to happen. Nothing’s going to change.’

It wasn’t about the money:

‘Honestly, the numbers just aren’t true. But again, it had to work out for us financially as well. I’m not saying that it didn’t and I’m not saying, “Oh, I’m not on good money” because it’s good money and it was a good deal but it wasn’t the numbers that were reported. No.

‘People can believe me or not, but in my life and my career, money has never been a motivation. Ever. Don’t get me wrong, when you move, the business deal has to be right. You have to have financials, you have to feel wanted, you have to feel valued. And money is a part of that.’

Saudi Arabia is the sole bidder to host the 2034 men’s World Cup, 12 years after Qatar – where homosexuality is also illegal – staged the global tournament.

Daniels said he ‘wouldn’t feel safe’ travelling to such places.

He said: ‘The World Cup that happened in Qatar, the one that is going to happen in Saudi Arabia, for me if I was there I wouldn’t feel safe, so that’s just putting your football in jeopardy.’

Daniels believes his decision to come out 18 months ago has helped his career.
‘It has been crazy since coming out,’ he added.

‘I didn’t think it would blow up as much as it did. The reception I’ve had, the people I’ve met, it’s been a crazy experience.

‘Coming out was the best thing I’ve ever done. I’m playing better now.’

Jamie Foxx accused of sexual assault at New York rooftop bar https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/jamie-foxx-accused-sexual-assault-new-york-rooftop-bar-19866202/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 07:45:52 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19866202

Hollywood star Jamie Foxx has been accused of sexual assault.

It is said to have occurred while at a New York rooftop bar eight years ago.

The lawsuit alleges in the summer of 2015, White House Down actor Foxx, 55, made comments such as ‘Wow, you have that super model body’ while at Catch NYC and rooftop, before later grabbing the woman by the arm and pulling her to the ‘secluded’ back of the rooftop.

It is here where it is alleged there was ‘heinous touching and sexual assault’ which has resulted in ‘severe emotional distress and anxiety’ as well as post-traumatic stress disorder for the woman.

The lawsuit, filed at the New York Supreme Court, alleges that Oscar-winner Foxx – real name Eric Bishop – was ‘operating through his position as a well-known celebrity’.

The woman, identified only as Jane Doe in court documents, is also suing Catch NYC and rooftop and it’s owner Mark Birnbaum, alleging they were ‘negligent’ and ‘failed to use reasonable care to prevent the acts described’ in the lawsuit.

It comes as the New York Adult Survivors Act is set to expire on Thursday, a law passed last year which allows a temporary window for those who allege sexual assault to file past the state’s normal deadlines.

Earlier this year, the Oscar-winning actor revealed he suffered a medical emergency, and spent several weeks in hospital due to a mystery illness.

He later explained how he could have died if it weren’t for the fast actions of his sister who saved him, before telling fans:  ‘You’re lookin at a man who is thankful… finally startin to feel like myself… it’s been an unexpected dark journey… but I can see the light.’

Upon his return to social media in July, the actor was forced to shut down the conspiracy theories about his mystery illness, including that he had been cloned during his time away from the public eye.

However, it’s not been an entirely smooth return as Jamie recently faced accusations of antisemitism after an Instagram post he shared about ‘fake friends’ and ‘fake love’, writing: ‘They killed this dude name Jesus… what do you think they’ll do to you?’

He later apologised while Friends actress Jennifer Aniston was dragged into the controversy when she reportedly ‘liked’ the post, which has since been deleted.

Metro.co.uk has approached reps for Jamie Foxx for comment.

Reece Sinclair leaves Neighbours as Mischa Barton's stint comes to an end
Mischa Barton’s time on Neighbours has concluded (Picture: Amazon Freevee)

Neighbours spoilers follow for Thursday’s (November 23) episode that is now available to stream on Amazon Freevee.

Reece Sinclair (Mischa Barton) made a huge decision in the wake of finding out that sister Krista (Majella Davis) is alive and well, resolving to return home to the US.

The businesswoman had received the upsetting news that her father Conrad, who is an investor in Lassiters, had suffered a stroke and therefore she decided it was necessary to head home and take the reins.

The news came as a shock to Byron Stone (Xavier Molyneux), who has fallen head over heels in love with Reece, with the two having become quite serious in recent months.

Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis), meanwhile, was left grinning with glee, delighted to have Reece, who he long suspected was a spy sent by his father, out of his hair.

The two foes shared a frosty exchange, with Reece telling Paul that she hopes he goes to jail for his role in the whole Krista scandal.

After packing up her belongings and taking one final look around the complex, Reece had Chloe Brennan (April Rose Pengilly) order her a cab, before sharing a heartfelt goodbye with her beloved Byron.

No, you’re crying.

This brings to an end Mischa Barton’s stint on Neighbours, with The OC star having featured regularly since the popular soap returned to screens courtesy of Amazon Freevee.

Melissa Barrera

Scream star Melissa Barrera has issued a statement following her exit from the horror franchise.

The actress, 33, starred in Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023) as Sam Carpenter – but won’t be returning for the next instalment titled Scream 7.

She was fired from the upcoming sequel over social media posts she made about Israel’s war with Hamas.

Follow our live blog for latest updates on the Israel-Hamas war

Although she has not directly commented on the reports, she did release a statement.

‘First and foremost I condemn Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people,’ she wrote on Instagram stories.

‘As a Latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need.’

The statement continued: ‘Every person on the earth – regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic status – deserves equal human rights, dignity, and, of course, freedom.

‘Silence is not an option for me.’ (Picture: Instagram/Melissa Barrera)

‘I believe a group of people are NOT their leadership and no governing body should be above criticism.

‘I pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence, and for peaceful co-existence. I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom.

‘Silence is not an option for me,’ she concluded.

Earlier this month, Melissa reshared a post from another Instagram user, which said ‘If you’re wondering how the world watched when genocides and ethnic cleansings happened… this is how.’

In a post to her page last month, she said she came from a colonised country, posting a Mexican flag, and said ‘Palestine will be free.’

In another post written by herself, she wrote ‘Just like all Palestinians are NOT Hamas, All Jewish people are NOT the Israeli Govt. Do not blame, or hate on, a whole group of people because of what some are doing.’

Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera

The actress, who has also starred in the blockbuster musical In The Heights and Netflix’s Keep Breathing, also said: ‘Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp. Cornering everyone together, with nowhere to go, no electricity no water … People have learnt nothing from our histories. And just like our histories, people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING.’

A spokesperson for Scream production company Spyglass said that the studio interpreted Melissa’s comments to be antisemitic, stating to Variety: ‘Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.’

Jenna Ortega

Melissa rose to prominence with her lead role in the reboot of Scream, becoming the new face of the franchise with Neve Campbell – who played protagonist Sidney Prescott – taking a backseat in 2022’s Scream before bowing out completely for Scream 7.

Scream 7’s director Christopher Landon is also reported to have tweeted and deleted: ‘Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.’

It is claimed that Jenna Ortega has quit the Scream franchise, but her exit is reportedly due to scheduling conflicts.

The outlet claims the script for Scream 7 is not yet ready and Jenna, 21, whose exit was reportedly discussed before the actor’s strike, is preparing to shoot the second season of Wednesday in April.

The war between Israel and Hamas continues to rage in Gaza after Israel responded to the October 7 attacks.

The tensions have escalated amid retaliatory attacks, with the Gaza media office reporting that the Palestinian death toll has reached 14,532.

Energy bills to rise 5% in January in reminder cost-of-living crisis isn’t over yet https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/energy-bills-increase-reminder-cost-of-living-crisis-isnt-19866067/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/energy-bills-increase-reminder-cost-of-living-crisis-isnt-19866067/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 07:12:14 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19866067

The average household energy bill will rise by £94 a year from January after Ofgem increased its price cap in response to rising wholesale prices.

The regulator announced it is raising its price cap from the current £1,834 for a typical dual fuel household to £1,928 from January 1, driven almost entirely by rising costs in the international wholesale energy market due to market instability and global events, particularly the conflict in Ukraine.

Ofgem chief executive Jonathan Brearley said: ‘This is a difficult time for many people, and any increase in bills will be worrying.

‘But this rise – around the levels we saw in August – is a result of the wholesale cost of gas and electricity rising, which needs to be reflected in the price that we all pay.

‘It is important that customers are supported and we have made clear to suppliers that we expect them to identify and offer help to those who are struggling with bills.

‘We are also seeing the return of choice to the market, which is a positive sign and customers could benefit from shopping around, with a range of tariffs now available offering the security of a fixed rate or a more flexible deal that tracks below the price cap.

‘People should weigh up all the information, seek independent advice from trusted sources and consider what is most important for them, whether that’s the lowest price or the security of a fixed deal.’

Meanwhile, the public has placed the blame for the rising prices firmly at the door of the Government.

Polling conducted prior to the Autumn Statement for the Warm This Winter campaign found that well over a third of the public (37%) already attributed significant responsibility for the energy bills crisis to Government policy.

Hardly any respondents (3%) said that Government policy bore no responsibility for high energy bills.

Fi Waters, spokesperson for the Warm This Winter campaign, commented: ‘We’re devastated that the emergency energy tariff that would give hard-pressed families money off their monthly bills has not been adopted by the Chancellor in the Autumn Statement, but we’ve not given up.

‘The Government should be putting the vulnerable, disabled people, the elderly, those with medical conditions and the pregnant first rather than condemning them to living in cold damp homes.’

Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, commented: ‘These price hikes come at the worst possible time for households. Bills will go up just as winter bites hard and household finances are hit further by Christmas credit cards, the long January pay period and the ongoing wider cost of living crisis.

‘We warned Ofgem that a January price cap rise was a bad idea when the regulator consulted on this in 2022. Now the chilling effect of the change is being realised, the inhumanity of this policy is clear to see.

‘It will be anything but a happy new year for people trapped in Britain’s broken energy system.’

Charley Webb and Matthew Wolfenden confirm split after five years of marriage https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/charley-webb-matthew-wolfenden-split-five-years-marriage-19866083/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/charley-webb-matthew-wolfenden-split-five-years-marriage-19866083/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 07:06:04 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19866083

Charley Webb and Matthew Wolfenden have announced their split after five years of marriage.

The pair who met on the set of Emmerdale originally began dating in 2007, and have three children, Buster, 12, Bowie, six, and Ace, three.

They shared a joint statement on Instagram to confirm the separation, which presented a united front.

‘It is with love and respect that Matthew and I have decided to separate. We remain friends and our priority is the love for our children. For their sake, we would appreciate privacy at this time,’ Charley’s post read.

While Matthew, 43, posted an almost-identical paragraph but swapped his own name for 35-year-old Charley’s name.

Their social media activity first sparked fans’ suspicions that they had perhaps called it a day.

Matthew – who recently left Emmerdale after 18 years in the role of David Metcalfe – unfollowed his wife on Instagram, before re-following, according to The Sun. He has not commented on any of her recent pictures or posted about her in over a year, and Charley’s grid has also been Matthew-free.

A source told the publication: ‘Charley and Matthew were in very different places in their lives when they first got together.

‘Three kids later and with new careers in the mix, everything has changed and perhaps they are no longer the unit they once were.’

Last week, Charley admitted to ignoring life. In her Instagram Story, the former Debbie Dingle actress posted a cryptic message which read: ‘Ignoring life and all the jobs I need to do. Also, I want more piercings.’

Matthew proposed on Christmas day in 2009, and after a brief split in 2013, the couple eventually tied the knot on February 10, 2018, although the wedding came as a surprise to their guests.

They were joined by 100 guests at Ripley Castle near Harrogate who thought they were attending Charley’s 30th birthday – when in fact they were getting married.

‘I’m not a big one for marriage, to be honest. It’s not that important to me,’ Charley told This Morning in 2019.

‘But this just felt a good way to do it, because it took the pressure off of everybody asking me a million questions – “What’s your dress like? Who’s going to be your bridesmaid?” – and I didn’t want any of that.

‘The attention is also too much. It just felt like a lot of attention.’

Both actors have left their roles on Emmerdale in recent years. Now, Matthew is playing Buddy the Elf in the newest revival of the musical, based on the 2003 film starring Will Ferrell.

Meanwhile, post-Emmerdale Charley bagged herself a role in ITV police series The Long Shadow which dramatises the five-year manhunt for the serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, commonly known as the Yorkshire Ripper.
